We are pragmatic problem-solvers committed to finding pathways to transform education at scale for Grade 0 – 3 learners in South Africa. We believe that every school child in South Africa deserves a strong foundation — where they can read with comprehension and calculate with confidence. This solid start doesn’t just make school easier; it supports learners to thrive, unlocking doors to tertiary education, exciting career paths, and brighter futures. 

Supporting long-term systemic change

As an independent philanthropic trust, we focus on the areas of the South African basic education system that need attention — the areas with great potential to generate long-term systemic change. Guided by an evidence-based approach, we carefully select the partners and interventions that can have an impact. By supporting scalable and sustainable interventions that can be embedded within the system, we aim to contribute to lasting change that benefits generations to come.

Joining forces with like-minded donors, research institutions, implementing organisations, and national and provincial governments allows us to pool resources, share expertise, and take on the complexities of the education sector together. By strengthening foundational literacy and numeracy in South Africa, we can help create opportunities that every South African school child deserves.

We are committed to improving the quality of education and learner outcomes through three strategic focus areas:
Building capabilities
Building capabilities in early grade learning

We support programmes that provide structured pedagogical interventions, which include the development of high-quality learning and teaching support materials and utilise home languages as an essential delivery mechanism.
